Types of Ticks
The two main types of ticks most people will ever encounter are the Black Legged Tick (or Deer Tick) and Brown Dog Tick:
- The Black Legged Tick (Deer Tick) has a body with a flattened oval shape and no hard shell. Its sharply pointed mouthpart is visible when viewed from above. They measure between 1/8” and 1/16” of an inch long, and become much larger when engorged with blood.
- The Brown Dog Tick is consistently 1/8” long, but can grow up to a full ½” when engorged with blood. It has a flattened body with mouth parts visible from above and the male has tiny pits scattered on its back.
